Trailer: Chadwick Boseman channels the spirit of James Brown in ‘Get On Up’

Get-On-Up

Universal Pictures have released the first trailer for their baity James Brown biopic Get On Up. Directed by The Help’s Tate Taylor, the biopic stars up-and-comer Chadwick Boseman as the godfather of soul. Boseman, who turned a lot of heads – including mine – last spring with his stirring work as Jackie Robinson in the biopic 42 looks to be on fire once again here – nailing Brown’s mannerisms, movement and spirit.

Whether Tate’s film will give him something to play with outside of the visibly strong impersonation is left to be seen. While it does look like a handsome production, it also seems to be checking off every box on the formulaic biopic recipe: Sassy maternal figures (played by The Help stars Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis), working class upbringing, triumphing over adversity, breaking musical grounds, drug use etc… I’m hoping Boseman’s performance will help the film transcend that but I won’t be holding my breath.

Watch the trailer below and make sure to speak up below in the comments section. Get On Up opens August 1, 2014.
