Paramount has released the first full trailer for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, the fifth entry in the hugely popular Mission: Impossible series. I don’t know about you but I’m incredibly stoked for this movie, perhaps more so than any other film opening this summer. Although I have Inside Out and Tomorrowland listed higher on my Most Anticipated Movies of 2015 list, I think this trailer may have been just enough to put Ethan Hunt and company on top. A lot of people dislike Cruise (for a myriad of valid reasons) but when it comes to his movies, the man rarely hits a false note. Last year’s Edge of Tomorrow was one of the 53-year-old superstar’s finest films, exemplifying his belief in taking on interesting (and risky) high-concept projects. I still believe he’s the last true global movie star (more so than Will Smith, Jennifer Lawrence, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington and Robert Downey Jr.)—an actor who can open a movie on any continent with a movie theater, and one who uses his clout to make quality blockbusters.
As for the Mission: Impossible franchise… it remains among the best and most creative franchises that are still active. Barring John Woo’s sub-par Mission: Impossible II, every film in this series has brought something new to the genre. Brad Bird’s 2011 entry, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, was probably the series highlight thus far so Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie (who also teamed up with Cruise on Valkyrie, Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow) have big shoes to fill. Based on this trailer, it sure looks like they’re up for it.
Establishing shot of an exotic locale – a staple of this series. Looks like Morocco.
We get our first shots of the IMF team. Here’s Jeremy Renner’s Brandt.
And here’s ol’ faithful… Ving Rhames! Back as Luther.
Simon Pegg also returns as Benji.
And finally… here’s Cruise as Ethan Hunt. An homage to this famous shot from Top Gun?
Is it just me or does this remind you of that bike chase in Mission: Impossible II?
Requisite shot of Tom Cruise running. Now shirtless. Run, Tom Cruise, Run!
Alec Baldwin mugging it up as a slimy government type. Is he our big bad?
Hunt reacting to something terrible while being suffocated by a gas.
Introducing… Rebecca Ferguson, our newest IMF member or decoy or double agent?
“The Syndicate is real”
Members all across the globe.
The team, back in action.
Preparing for what will certainly be a big set-piece.
Reminiscent of this shot from Kill Bill.
Cracking the code.
Cruise slightly overdoing it.
Just a great shot.
Likely to be part of the film’s centerpiece action sequence.
And the film’s money shot. Cruise, you’re crazy, man.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation opens July 31, 2015.
